BOHEMIA, NY (June 18, 2013) – FrontStreet Facility Solutions Chief Development Officer Joseph Scaretta recently awarded two Long Island young entrepreneurs $10,000 in start-up funding and mentorship in exchange for winning the Second Annual Long Island Young Entrepreneur Challenge (LI YEC).
Woodmere, NY resident Eric Forkosh won the Entrepreneur Track and Stony Brook University student Jesse Tang won the Student Track. The challenge was sponsored by FrontStreet Facility Solutions Inc. (FrontStreet) in partnership with Capital One Bank.
“All of the finalists were impressive when they pitched their plans to our judges,” Scaretta, founder of the LI YEC, said. “The passion in their voices was exciting. The winners chosen carry the same entrepreneurial spirit we share at FrontStreet, and we appreciate the opportunity to contribute to their future business success.”
In his live pitch to an esteemed panel of judges, Forkosh detailed plans for the SmartEKG – a comfortable, personalized heart monitor. The sleek vest is invisible under clothing and allows for a full range of motion without irritation. The device also syncs wirelessly with the patient’s Smartphone, involving patient interaction in the monitoring process and providing data to medical professionals via an online portal.
During Tang’s pitch, he outlined his plans for Pink Nori Japanese Restaurant & Bar, which will feature authentic, fresh and high quality Japanese and Asian-inspired cuisine. Upon opening later this summer, the location at 36-06 30th Avenue in Astoria will offer both traditional and specialized sushi rolls in its relaxed environment. The Pink Nori menu will be highlighted by a “make your own roll” option, catering to the customer’s palate by allowing them to select every ingredient in their sushi roll, including the seaweed wrap, fish, vegetables and sauce.
The LI YEC is an annual business pitch competition, engaging entrepreneurs, ages 17-22, who either live on Long Island or are enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited Long Island college or university. In addition to start-up funding, winners won access to essential business services such as marketing, public relations, and legal advice. This year’s winners also received an iPad mini donated by Sprint.
